Harmony How-to: Starting a Book Club
Posted by Customer Care on
A connected life is a balanced and happy life. If you are looking for ways to add a new hobby, connect with friends, or even grow your tribe, consider starting a book club.
There are so many benefits to reading. You can increase your vocabulary, stimulate your brain, become more empathetic, and boost your emotional intelligence.
Researchers have even found that “people who read books for as little as 30 minutes a day over several years were living an average of two years longer than people who didn’t read anything at all.” (ReadersDigest).
Starting a book club is quite easy and you can find and choose a basic checklist online that works for you, like this one from Real Simple. Once you’ve got the logistics figured out, the most important aspect of your book club is to make it fun.
When you host a book club meeting, make it a lighthearted get together. Themed drinks and hors d’oevres are a tried and true way to break the ice. Make sure you plan time to unwind and socialize before you dive into the discussion. (Some book clubs don’t even make it to the discussion part of the evening)!
Since you are focused on building connections with this club, create a safe space to share ideas and get to know each other. Your book club rules of the road should demand mutual respect and the host should moderate the discussion so that everyone has a chance to speak and no one person dominates.
Choosing your first book can be tough. It doesn’t matter what it is, but a great way to kick things off is by choosing a theme that everyone in the group cares about – like harmony – and exploring it through several different books that provide different ideas and angles. Not only will you have your first 3 or 4 selections made off the bat, your club members will be able to discover common ground that grows your personal connections.
