Harmony Around the World: Norway
Posted by Customer Care on
Norway is a region blessed with stunning natural wonders. It’s no surprise that Norwegians make outdoor activity a central focus in their lives. Communing with nature is a wonderful way to bring harmony, joy and balance into your life.
If you want to benefit from a little Norwegian harmony, it’s simple. It all starts with friluftsliv.
Friluftsliv is pronounced free-loofts-liv. This is a famously known Norwegian “motto,” however it has no direct translation. A loose American comparison would be outdoor living or the great outdoors.
Norwegians spend much of their time outdoors in athletic pursuits that are great for the body and the soul. Hiking is an excellent example, and one that many of us can easily incorporate into our own lives. One of the keys is finding the right backdrop to bring the sensory experience in line with the physical experience.
Norwegians of course have a lot of breathtaking scenery for hiking. The country is home to amazing fjords (deep inlets of the sea between high cliffs) and waterfalls. And for half of the year, Norwegians can hike out and experience the indescribable beauty of the green and white Northern Lights.
Also to their hiking advantage, Norwegians have what is known as the Midnight Sun. Basically, for a few months each year – during the Norwegian summer - the sun never sets and can be seen around the clock. This gives Norwegians extended daylight to enjoy all that nature has to offer.
Although we don’t have Northern Lights or a Midnight Sun, we can still embrace a little Norwegian outdoor harmony (or friluftsliv). Grab some good hiking or walking shoes, meet up with some friends, and explore the natural beauty of your hometown. You will build a sense of comradery, likely have a few laughs, and get a good workout. Most importantly, you might just be able to gain new appreciation for all that you are blessed with, as if experiencing it for the first time.
