Harmony Movie Reviews: Gone with the Wind
Posted by Customer Care on
Gone with the Wind is one of the most iconic movies in history. On lists ranking famous movie lines, “Frankly My Dear . . .” most certainly appears. But, if you take away Rhett Butler and Ashley Wilkes, there is arguably a more interesting story in the friendship of Scarlett O’Hara and Melanie Hamilton-Wilkes. Some might even say their friendship is the true center of the movie. Women today are seeking balance and harmony – a world where we support and elevate each other. The friendship of Scarlett and Melly still withstands the test of time, ultimately providing a demonstration of harmonious woman power.
Think about it. The surprising combination of the feisty, ambitious, and temperamental Scarlett with the calm, quiet, but steel-willed Melly is the perfect balance and blend. Each woman has something the other desperately wants. For Scarlett, it is the love of Ashley. For Melly, it is Scarlett’s passion for life. Deep down, I believe they both recognize the quality of the others formidable strength.
So familiar and yet coming from such a different internal place. Scarlett and Melly challenge each other, support each other when it matters most, and in the end, each is willing to put the other above themselves. There were certainly issues within the friendship. Maybe even a touch (or shove) of “frenemies” here and there. Who wouldn’t be challenged if their best friend was shamelessly chasing their husband or if their husband had much more respect for their best friend than themselves? But at the end of the day, the friendship worked because they each grew to love and respect the other for who they were at the core. There was no need for artifice. No putting on your best face.
What do you think? Do you have a friend that loves you despite your worst qualities? Someone who supports you, even when you least deserve it? Someone who comes through for you at your lowest moment, despite how you might lash out at them? Does every Scarlett need a Melly, and every Melly need a Scarlett?
